Born on September 10, 1863, Spearman started studying philosophy but shortly discontinued his studies to join the army. After 15 years of being an officer in the British Army, Spearman realized the future of philosophy lay in psychology. He then began studying under famed psychologist Wilhelm Wundt and got his degree.
Charles Spearman was one of the pioneers of intelligence, forming his theory involving a general intelligence factor, g, and a specific intelligence factor, s, in the early 20th century. This became known as the two-factor theory of intelligence. In addition, Spearman developed the idea that all aspects of intelligence are correlated with each other. Therefore, he hypothesized that only a general intelligence test and a specific intelligence test were needed to gauge one's intelligence, and g and s would both influence the outcome of each test.
