Mental retardation, also known as intellectual disability, is a learning disability in which a person holds an IQ below 70, and may or may not be dependent on others. With this condition, these people are usually not able to form adaptive behaviors, which is the reason for the struggle in learning. Degrees of mental retardation range from a mild form to a serve form in which a person is fully dependent on others for their well being. A certain syndrome that falls under this category is Down Syndrome, which occurs when a child is born with an extra X-chromosome. This condition includes a low IQ, and certain facial features. But in today school environment, many children with Down Syndrome are capable of growing up to become independent adults who can take care of themselves and even hold a job.
